Shoulder surgery or wait?
19.November, 2008
I have had severe shoulder pain for about 4 months now, about 2 months ago I went to orthopedics to have it looked at and they gave me a cortisone shot in the joint, It gave me about 95% relief for about a week and a half, and I have been doing the excersises he gave me to strengthen my muscles in the shoulder. I went back today still with the same pain, he said I could either do the surgery or do physical therapy for a while to see if it helps. He said I have shoulder impingement, as well as maybe a tear in the labrum. Should I go ahead with the surgery or do the physical therapy first? Thank you for your opinions.
i would always try PT first before undergoing surgery. PT can REALLY do good things for you if you do it regularly. i had a terrible back injury and i went to PT 4 times a week for about 7 months, and my back pain is 90% improved with PT only, no surgery involved. i had surgery discussed with me as an option as well and the PT fixed it right up. so try the PT first and if you are still in pain then i would go do surgery because you cant live in pain.

You should do the PT, even if it doesn't fix the problem, it will help you heal faster after the surgery. Then you'll need PT again.

if you have the choice do physical therapy, why go through surgery if you dont have to.. Also does your insurance cover both? that might be a factor in your decision too. Or for how long the physical therapy will take. How serious is your pain? I would never do surgery if I had other options I could try first.
