Go to the local sports store and buy one of the mouth guards (usually red) for about $2. I cut the ends so that it fits over the front of your teeth. That keeps you from being able to close your mouth completely. That also gives the tendons on your jaw a rest, so that you can sleep. It will work. Until then, you can just put a toothpick in the back of your mouth, so that you cannot completely close your mouth. I also have a dentist made mouth piece that works just like the $2 mouthguard from the sports store. You need to try to relax your lower jaw and quit gritting your teeth. Until you stop gritting your teeth, put the mouthpiece (or toothpick) in your mouth so you cannot completely close your mouth. A dentist can help by adjusting your "bite" so you don't "grind" anymore. Take Advil if you can, but when you quit "overstretching" your tendons, it will feel better immediately. Put ice on your jaw to make it numb. You have to keep doing that every fifteen minutes or so. But that's what you have to do to get to sleep. When the pain goes away, it's much easier to get to sleep.

You can buy a mouth guard right in your local pharmacy department for now. My doctor also suggested that I take ibuprofen every 4 hours for 2 weeks straight to reduce the swelling in the jaw. and to hold ice on it when it hurts. You should talk to your doctor about doing that though. call your insurance company and they will find someone who will take your insurance for you. It wont get better as long as youre still grinding your teeth so definitely get the mouth guard.

The soft plastic mouth guard is good start, but uncomfortable
Many dentists can make a confortable mouthguard called an NTI (about $240 if you have no insurance). My insurance actually covered it, but that is a bit unusual.
The NTI is actually better than a full hard mouthguard and less expensive. You can get used to them very fast.
If you suspect tension, and stress, Pilates, cardio, and weightlifting (uppder body) are all good for TMJ issues. There are a lot of neck shoulders.

Important: If you get an NTI, keep it away form dogs and pets. The love to chew them up!

I have seen specialists, but actually found that a lot of dentists can help. when you shop for dentists just ask if they will make an NTI for you.
